I thought the terrifying, scarred junkyard owner next door was a monster, until I caught him in the freezing snow, saving a stray cat for my traumatized, silent daughter. “Mia! Get away from the fence right now!” I screamed, my heart pounding in my throat as I sprinted into the freezing dirt of our tiny …
I thought the pregnant cat was begging for food, until she led me to the house that had stopped loving her. She was sitting at the end of a cracked driveway on a hot July morning, her belly hanging low, her sides moving fast. Not panting like a dog would, but breathing hard enough that …
I thought my grumpy male cat hated every living thing smaller than him until four baby chicks moved in and started calling him Mama. Cookie was not a soft cat. He was a big orange tomcat with one cloudy eye, a belly that swung when he walked, and the personality of a retired man who …
The woman on the phone said she had changed her mind. Before I could answer, Lolly climbed onto my chest and pressed one paw over my heart. I was sitting in my parked car outside the rescue, with the engine off and my coffee gone cold in the cup holder. Lolly was in the passenger …
Am I wrong for canceling my wedding and kicking my fiancé out because he secretly “rehomed” my 15-year-old cat while I was on a business trip? I am a 29-year-old woman. I own my home and I am completely financially independent. My fiancé is 32. He moved in with me six months ago. I have …
They crushed my one-eared cat under their massive tires and offered me a hundred-dollar bill, but they never expected what I built from the pieces left behind. “It’s just a stray, old man,” the foreman said, casually wiping grease from his hands with a dirty rag. He didn’t even look down at the dirt where …
For five years, Moka gave away the only thing he had left, until one terrified kitten made him refuse to take it back. I still remember the first time I saw the blue toy mouse outside another cat’s cage. It was early on a morning. I had just come in for my volunteer shift at …
I had stopped calling my missing cat’s name, not because I stopped loving him, but because hope had started to hurt too much. Leo had been gone for one full year. Not almost a year. Not a few hard months. A year. He slipped out on a Monday afternoon, the kind of day nobody remembers …
The volunteer said one sentence that made my chest go cold: “He’s not giving it to you. He’s trying to buy a home.” I had walked into the shelter that Saturday morning with one clear plan. I wanted a kitten. A tiny one. Soft, silly, easy to love. One with no sad history, no bad …
I was supposed to keep three kittens for one night. By breakfast, my old dog had adopted them and fired me from motherhood. It started with a cardboard box on my porch. I opened the front door at 6:15 in the morning, still in my robe, holding a cup of coffee I had not earned …
My cat could never have kittens, but one night she came through the pet door carrying a baby that wasn’t hers. I knew Junie couldn’t have kittens from the day I adopted her. The woman at the shelter told me she had been fixed young. No babies. No litter. No tiny gray kittens with her …
At 4:37 on a Tuesday afternoon, I met a 19-year-old cat with three hours left to live, and she reached for me. I had not gone to the county shelter to bring anyone home. I need to say that first. I had gone there with a box of old towels, two unopened bags of soft …
We brought Babo home to give him a peaceful ending, but three weeks later, that old cat made us look like fools. I know how that sounds. Cold, maybe. But it was the truth. The shelter called it a hospice adoption. Babo was fifteen years old, maybe older. Nobody knew for sure. He was a …
I went to the shelter for one old cat, but two untouched food bowls stopped me before I reached the last cage. That was the first thing I noticed. Not the smell of bleach. Not the soft crying from the kitten room. Not even the wall full of photos with little red hearts taped beside …
The night my partner gave me his final warning, my two cats were asleep on my chest, purring like they already knew goodbye was coming. He didn’t yell. That almost made it worse. He stood in the bedroom doorway with his arms crossed, looking at my bed like something dirty had happened there. Nala was …
