The night I nearly collapsed in my kitchen, my silent cat opened his mouth to scream and my deaf one felt it first. I still think about that night when people say pets are just pets. I live in a one-bedroom apartment in a tired brick building where the heat knocks and pipes complain like …
The first Monday after I retired, I sat in my driveway for forty-seven minutes because I couldn’t think of one reason to go inside. I still had my work shirt on. Still had my watch on too, like I was late for something. But nobody was waiting on me anymore. For almost forty years, my …
I was already late for work when I saw a little boy kiss a cat like it was the most important thing in the world. That was enough to stop me. Not slow me down. Not make me glance over. Stop me. It was cold in that sharp, mean way mornings can be in late …
The day after we buried my grandfather, I found his old cat under his bed, still waiting for a man who was never coming home. I saw her eyes first. Two yellow coins shining out of the dark beneath his bed while the rest of the house sat still around me. The funeral had been …
The first time that stray cat slept in my bed, I realized something in my house had been lonelier than me. I had been in that rental for six weeks, and I still hadn’t unpacked half my boxes. Not because I was busy. Just because I couldn’t see the point. The place was small, drafty, …
The first time my tuxedo cat made me cry, he was hanging from my shower curtain at three in the morning like a tiny burglar in formalwear. I had adopted him three days earlier. I remember standing there in the dark, one hand on the bathroom light, watching this black-and-white menace swing back and forth …
My husband swore that orange cat would destroy our marriage, but the night Cheddar went quiet, I saw who he really loved. The first time my husband said, “It’s me or the cat,” Cheddar was standing in his dinner plate like a tiny orange landlord collecting rent. I should explain something. My husband, Mark, is …
The day my orange kitten chased a butterfly into the street, I had no idea I wouldn’t hold him again for 538 days. I still remember how small he looked that morning. Sunny had yellow fur with deep orange stripes, the kind that made people stop and smile when they saw him sitting in the …
“If I didn’t take the old gray cat that night, the woman at the shelter said he wouldn’t still be alive by morning.” She said it quietly, like she had already said it too many times that week. I remember looking past her, down that row of metal cages, and thinking surely she meant some …
I went to donate my dead cat’s things, and then I saw an old shelter cat do something I still can’t forget. The rain had been falling since breakfast, the steady kind that makes the whole day feel tired before it even starts. I sat in my car outside the shelter with a cardboard box …
The cat was screaming so hard in the parking lot, I honestly thought I was watching a kidnapping in broad daylight. I had just come out of the grocery store with two bags cutting into my fingers when I saw him. An older man, maybe seventy, stood beside an old sedan with the back door …
We were already halfway home with one shelter kitten when I realized the one we left behind had somehow followed us. Not in the car. Not in the carrier. In my head. In my chest. In that awful, quiet place where you know something is wrong, even if you’ve already made the sensible choice. My …
The vet said she wouldn’t make it till morning. Four months later, she ran my whole apartment like she paid rent. Four months ago, I went to the grocery store for eggs, bread, and the cheap frozen meals I bought when I was too tired to cook. I was already in a bad mood before …
The ugliest cat in the room reached for me with a seven-toed paw right when I was deciding to give up. I was forty-eight, tired clear through to the bone, and standing in a small animal adoption room that smelled like bleach, dust, and old blankets. I had not gone there looking for a pet. …
The first time that broken stray dragged himself into our clinic, I honestly thought he came there to die. It was close to closing time on a wet Thursday night. The lobby lights were dimmed, the floor still smelled like disinfectant, and I was wiping down the front counter, already thinking about leftovers and sleep. …
