Everyone called the scar-faced stray a monster, until the night he reached my daughter before I did. The first time I saw him, he was sitting by the broken step outside our apartment building, watching people like he already knew what they would think. He was a big gray tomcat with one torn ear, a …
The whole school laughed when my bully played a humiliating video of me on stage, but then a 110-pound scarred rescue dog crashed the assembly and shut everyone up. I couldn’t breathe. The laughter of four hundred teenagers bounced off the gym walls, ringing in my ears like a siren as I stared at the …
I violently chased away a scarred stray pitbull to protect a wealthy customer’s golden retriever, only to check the security cameras and realize I had just protected a monster. The screams erupted out of nowhere. One second my cafe’s patio was filled with the sounds of clinking coffee glasses, and the next, total chaos. A …
Five massive bikers smuggled a one-eyed, battle-scarred cat into a strict pediatric cancer ward at 2 AM. Nurses thought it was a security breach, but it was actually a miracle. “You absolutely cannot bring that animal in here!” Nurse Margaret’s voice cracked like a whip through the sterile, brightly lit hallway of the pediatric oncology …
My wife made tiny cat hats for strangers because the one cat she loved had vanished without a sound. His name was Buttons. He was an old orange cat with crooked whiskers, one torn ear, and the loudest purr I had ever heard. He had been with us through two apartments, one bad winter, my …
I made warm tuna for my dying cat, and the woman at my door knew the scar on his ear. Cono was sixteen years old. He lay on the old blue blanket by the kitchen window, thin as a rolled-up towel, his orange fur faded almost cream around his face. His green eyes had gone …
They gave a 75-year-old widower exactly 48 hours to get rid of his deaf rescue dog or face immediate eviction, so the local delivery drivers delivered a massive surprise. Arthur’s hands shook violently as he read the bright orange paper taped to his front door. Buster, his ten-year-old Boxer mix, nudged the old man’s knee …
I caught a Golden Retriever staging distractions so a plumber could steal heart medication, but what I found in a rusty van broke my heart. My hand clamped down over his scarred wrist right as his fingers brushed the cardboard box of expensive insulin pens. “I’ve got you,” I whispered, keeping my voice low so …
I lost the biggest commission of my year because an old orange cat refused to die quietly. That is the truth. I had three unpaid bills on my kitchen counter, a car that made a grinding sound every time I turned left, and a listing that could have saved my month. The house was a …
I locked twenty-five high school seniors inside a dirt ring with a heavily scarred, supposedly dangerous rescue horse, and the principal almost called the police on me. The heavy wooden gate slammed shut with a sharp crack that echoed all the way across the schoolyard. I slid the rusted metal bolt firmly into place. I …
I was legally authorized to shoot the “killer” black horse trespassing on my property, but when I saw what it was doing to my mute daughter, my heart stopped completely. My finger hovered over the cold metal trigger of my hunting rifle. The crosshairs were locked dead center on the massive, scarred chest of the …
The morning my cat ripped open a brand-new bag of kibble, I thought he was just being fat and rude. To be fair, Sheriff had a history. He was orange, round, and carried himself like a divorced man who had won the house. He knocked things off shelves for sport. He sat on my chest …
The vet slid the pen toward me and asked which heartbreak I wanted to live with tonight. I stared at that pen like it was a loaded thing. Turnip lay wrapped in his old blue towel on the metal table, his orange fur dull under the exam room light. He had always hated that table. …
I waited beside the highway for two days because I believed my mom had only forgotten the way back. That was the only thought I had left. Not hunger. Not fear. Not the big trucks shaking the ground under my paws. Just that one thought. Mom will come back. She had set me down near …
My cat dragged a gray men’s sock onto my porch like he had just solved a murder. He dropped it at my feet, sat down, and stared at me. I stared back. “Absolutely not,” I told him. Nacho blinked once, slow and rude, the way only an overweight orange cat can blink when he knows …
