Four years after my orange cat vanished, I called his name in a strange parking lot and a broken little animal froze mid-step. I was delivering a bag of groceries to a coworker who had hurt her ankle when I saw him. At first, he was just a flash of dirty orange moving between two …
The two cats in front of me were scheduled to die at nine the next morning, and one of them was still grooming the other. The smaller cat was a calico named Naya. She kept licking the side of Nero’s face, slow and careful, like she was trying to calm him down. Nero was a …
I was ten minutes from returning Cooper to the shelter when he placed my last granola bar in my lap and refused to eat it. That dog had been testing me from the day I brought him home. I had only gone to the shelter to look around. At least, that was what I told …
By the time I looked up from the front desk, a little boy was standing there sobbing, with a limp orange cat clutched to his chest. I have worked enough early shifts to know panic when I see it. It was barely past opening. The coffee in my paper cup had already gone lukewarm, and …
The cat was half frozen, barely breathing, and stranded above black floodwater—but the second I touched him, he locked both paws around my neck. I had been working flood rescues for three straight days. The rain had swallowed roads, porches, mailboxes, and entire first floors. From the boat, all I could see were rooftops, tree …
The old service dog crossed the crowded pharmacy, pressed his gray muzzle against my knee, and gave a signal no one else should have known. Two taps with his right paw. Then he leaned his full weight against my left leg. For a second, I forgot how to breathe. “Ollie?” His ears lifted at the …
My father did not shed one tear when my mother died. Two years later, he collapsed on the kitchen floor over an old dog. At Mom’s funeral, Dad stood by the door and shook every hand. He thanked people for coming. He carried folding chairs. He packed leftover food into the refrigerator. When I hugged …
I thought nobody would ever choose the crippled kitten until a boy with thirty-nine cents showed me the metal leg hidden beneath his jeans. My name is Jack Turner. I’m fifty-eight years old, and I live on a small piece of land outside a quiet Ohio town. Last spring, five kittens were born in my …
Three weeks after I buried my son, his cat woke me at two in the morning and led me to a voice I thought was gone forever. I had never liked cats. They got hair on everything, knocked things off shelves, and acted like paying attention to you was some kind of favor. My son …
We were told the rescue cat might hide under the bed for weeks. Ten minutes after arriving, he stole my pillow and refused to move. My daughter Emily stood in the doorway of my bedroom, laughing so hard she had to hold the wall. There was Rio, a gray-and-white cat with one broken whisker and …
I had already driven past the starving cat when I looked in my mirror and saw him running after my car through the freezing rain. He should not have had the strength. He was so thin I could see the sharp line of his spine under his wet orange fur. One ear had a small …
A year after my cat vanished, I found him standing on a lonely bike trail, but instead of running to me, he turned and led me into the woods. I nearly rode right past him. It was a gray February afternoon, the kind we get in the Midwest when winter has worn out its welcome …
The man who killed my cat was also the reason she did not die alone on the side of a cold suburban road. It happened on a Tuesday morning. I was standing in my kitchen, waiting for the coffee to finish, when my phone rang. The number belonged to a veterinary clinic a few miles …
Two days after my elderly neighbor died, I found her cat on my porch with a note that made me sit down. Poca was inside a carrier, curled against a faded towel. Beside him sat a grocery bag with food, two cans, and a red yarn ball. He did not meow. He stared at me …
At three in the morning, my dying cat climbed fourteen stairs he had not climbed in two months and I knew exactly why he came. Charlie had been with me since I was twenty-one. Back then, I lived in a tiny apartment in Ohio with thin walls, secondhand furniture, and a refrigerator that made more …
