They returned the kitten they called forever, and I was ready to hate them until I found what they hid under his blanket. The woman handed me the kitten in a laundry basket like he was a load of towels she didn’t want anymore. “He just doesn’t fit our lifestyle,” Linda said. That was it. …
They warned me not to touch the pregnant cat on Park Avenue. Five minutes later, she was in my passenger seat, begging me not to leave. That is the part I still can’t stop thinking about. The post in our neighborhood group said there was a “mean stray” hiding near the dumpsters behind the old …
I laughed when I first saw the old woman walking a cat on a leash. Then I saw what the cat carried on her back. It was a Tuesday morning in our little Ohio town, the kind of morning where everyone moved like they had too much on their mind and not enough coffee. I …
The first thing Walker did after someone broke his ribs was reach for my hand like he still believed people were safe. I found him behind a closed little shop at the edge of a tired strip mall, the kind of place most folks drive past without looking twice. He was pressed against a stack …
The man I thought I might marry pointed at my two cats and gave me the cruelest choice of my life. “It’s me or them,” Ethan said. He stood in the middle of my little living room in Ohio with his coat already on, like he had rehearsed the whole thing in the car. My …
Six days after my wife’s funeral, I adopted two unwanted old cats because I was too ashamed to admit I needed saving too. The house sounded different after Ruth died. That is the only way I know how to say it. The refrigerator hummed too loud. The floorboards creaked like strangers walking through the hallway. …
By the fourth time that black cat stole from my meat counter, I was ready to call him the boldest little criminal in Ohio. I run a small butcher shop on a tired street in Dayton. Nothing fancy. Just an old glass counter, a bell over the door, and a floor that creaks in the …
The night my elderly neighbor beat on my door, bleeding and breathless, she didn’t ask me to save her, she asked me to save her cat. It was close to midnight, and I had just kicked off my shoes after a twelve-hour shift. My feet were throbbing. My back felt like somebody had taken a …
I thought somebody had dumped a broken Halloween decoration behind the trash cans. Then that blue little statue blinked at me. That was the moment my whole chest went cold. It was a Thursday night, a little after eleven, and I was walking behind a row of old repair shops on the edge of town. …
I thought my deaf old cat was just yelling at ghosts, until he screamed at a neighbor’s door that hadn’t opened in two days. Blue was twenty-two years old. Not twenty-two in cat years. Twenty-two actual years. He had blue eyes, a bony little body, and the kind of attitude that made you feel like …
I only adopted the old cat because my house had gotten too quiet. Then she led me to a letter my wife had hidden before she died. My wife died in February. After forty-two years of marriage, I learned that silence has weight. It sits in the kitchen chair across from you. It follows you …
I only went to the shelter to drop off my mother’s old blankets, but one gray paw reached through the cage and stopped me cold. I had promised myself I would not look too closely. That was the rule. Walk in. Hand over the blankets. Say thank you. Walk out. No names. No cages. No …
The shelter warned me she had an attitude problem, but honestly, that cat looked richer than everyone I knew, including my landlord. Her name was Duchess. Not Princess. Not Fluffy. Not Mittens. Duchess. And she sat inside that little metal cage like she was waiting for the manager of the whole building to come apologize. …
My upstairs neighbor moved out before sunrise and left a gray cat crying at an empty door like someone had died. I heard him before I saw him. It was a thin, cracked sound coming from the hallway above my apartment. Not a normal meow. Not the kind cats make when they want dinner or …
I was ready to be angry at Ben for bringing home another problem, until that tiny problem exposed the truth we were hiding. It was one of those cold nights where the whole street looked tired. The lawns were brown. The trash cans were knocked sideways by the wind. Every house on our block had …
